Falmouth

A birthday treat in beautiful Cornwall.

My best friend has brought me to Falmouth. ‘Fun and food’ she tells me. ‘Oh, and you’ll be going in the sea.’

Came the response .. ‘I shall not.’

Our home for two nights is here ..

We are but a hop, skip and a jump from the beach and a great looking bar overlooking the sea.

Chum doesn’t hesitate and, upon arrival, is straight in her cozzie and taking a dip. I get a couple of glasses of decent rosé in for us ahead of her return to dry land.

Our dining destination on the first night is another birthday gift - from my Godson.

A heavenly place which delivered some of the finest seafood I have been lucky enough to eat.

A small space but there’s enough room between tables so that you don’t feel like you’re sharing your evening with strangers. Top service, friendly, enthusiastic and informative.

To share at the start ..

Hake Fingers with Tartare Sauce - I think I could have just eaten these all night. Crispy yet yielding batter with the chunkiest hake within

Prawns in Sherry - Who knew these sweet crustaceans were partial to a drop of the finest fortified wine from Jerez

We both went for the catch of the day - Plaice with Caper Butter & Fines Herbes with a side of Broccoli with Anchovies

There had been a plan to walk back along a coastal path. Not on your nelly. Firstly, neither of us has a decent sense of direction. Secondly, it would've been a 40-50 minute walk at least, in the dark.

Taxi for two & home in 6 minutes. A long, but most rewarding, train journey from London to the south west followed by a magnificent meal straight from the sea.

Time for bed.
