Sometimes things go wrong… and they turn out alright.

Corfu Town was busy. Either I am very lucky and always hit the place when there is some kind of festival or national day, or they have a festival every day. Not sure which it is.

This one was Ionian Unification Day. It’s held every year to commemorate the official union of Corfu with Greece after years of foreign rule. I should point out that the ‘foreign rule’ they wanted to be liberated from was British. It had been a protectorate of the British from 1815 after Napoleonic Wars and lasted till 1864.

And you do very much get that sense of Britishness when you wander around. A familiar Georgian/ Victorian architecture maybe?

There was a parade, and a slightly surreal feel to the streets with many people wearing traditional costume. It was capped off with a thunderous fly-past by the Greek air force.

Anyway …

I needed a light lunch and settled on a fairly standard eatery on the fringes of the old town, just far enough off the beaten track to be regarded as ‘a place that locals frequent.’ It was quite busy, and I would say the waiting staff were a little rushed off their feet. Eventually I managed to attract their attention and successfully ordered a beer, but then I clearly didn’t make my choice clear.

I didn’t want a main dish - they look massive - instead I opted for a couple of starters. I liked the sound of the pork in mushrooms, and a plate of chips.

It turned up quite quickly - only my pork was AWOL.

I thought about pointing this out, but then reconsidered as it looked nice, if a little bit odd.

It was delicious. I feared it was all on the greasy side, but that turned out not to be the case. The main thing was it all tasted great.

Hoorah for mistakes.
