Love's Labours Not Entirely Lost
I was late in Penzance…
A dentists appointment in the town centre. I’d arrived far too early so I had a really good ‘mooch’ about.
I like to watch.
People going about their daily business. Watching what people are doing, what they are buying, and more importantly what they are not buying.
Getting close to 3pm, I noticed a queue forming outside a baker’s.
‘You always meet the best people on a Wednesday afternoon here,’ said one well spoken lady. She was picking up a discounted bag of baked goods thanks to To Good to Go and Baker Tom’s. People know a bargain when they see it.
Valentines’s Day of course. I don’t have a garden, nor do I have anywhere I can put pot plants. So my quick look into a florists shop was purely vicarious. Into conversation, as is my habit, I was told that things were quiet today.
Have people lost the art of love, I wondered. ‘Not much money around to buy fancy things,’ I was told.
But nipping into a couple of supermarkets, interesting to see the crowds gathering around the discounted section. However … not many bargains to be had there either - apart from … Valentine’s Specialities.
Bagged a cheesecake for my tea, post dentist, as a treat.
Not entirely wasted then.
