Smokin'!
An impromptu early evening supper this week brought a new discovery.
The Smokehouse https://smokehouseislington.co.uk
My friend & I had been to this establishment many times before this visit when it was simply known as The House. A pub with quite posh grub & white tablecloths.
This part of north London is teeming with places to eat. The variety & rich seam of food on offer is a testament to the diversity of the neighbourhood & to the culinary joys they're generous to share.
From Georgia to Mexico, from Afghanistan to Lebanon, there's so much fayre to discover.
On this Spring night though, it's a walk from the main drag to avoid the Easter break crowds & perchance to revisit The House after an absence of a good few years. Different establishment but, nonetheless, we were both pleased to see that the building was still a pub with grub. Smoked grub.
A Negroni to start proceedings with a look at the menu.
We agree upon a selection of treats to share.
Smoked Saxons Asparagus, Poached Egg & Hollandaise (1 each)
Fat Chips & Roast Garlic Aioli
Garlic Truffle Mushrooms
Smoked Cauliflower Cheese
Bread & Beer Fat Butter (for mopping up of the yolk & sauce)
The asparagus & cauliflower cheese in particular blew us away. The smokiness was fantastic. I asked one of their team how that was achieved. He said that the food is grilled over charcoal using sustainably sourced English oak.
I felt bad that I had to leave one solitary spear on my plate, but there was not one inch of space in my tum left to fill.
