Village Pub Sunday Lunch
I'm out and about in the county I grew up in. Nottinghamshire.
Time to be with family & friends & it's short but precious to me.
The venue for Sunday lunch is a country pub with history & recommendations.
We're in North Notts near to Southwell at The Red Lion in Thurgarton.
https://www.redlionthurgarton.co.uk
It's a 16th Century ale house set in a village which has a few stories behind its name.
Thurgarton - one historian claims that its origins came from the Norse god, 'Thor' & 'garth' meaning garden or homestead.
Meanwhile ..
Another historian thought that a holy man was behind Thurgarton. Turgar, an Anglo-Saxon novice monk who apparently survived a Danish raid on Crowland Abbey in Lincolnshire which is nearby.
Or ..
Some other academics reject both of these and say that you can trace the village’s name to the Scandinavian personal name 'Thorgeirr' & the Anglo Saxon 'ton’. meaning settlement.
Any old how. Pick your favourite tale & run with it.
The three of us have now firmly parked ourselves indoors & we're hungry. Not so much that we choose to have starters though. Foolish.
The main event ..
Rump of Beef
Fresh Grated Horseradish
Yorkshire Pudding
Sausagemeat Stuffing
Herb Roasted Potatoes
Carrot & Swede Mash
Roasted Carrots
Seasonal Greens
Roasted Cauliflower Cheese
Bone Marrow Gravy
I was glad to have swerved the starter because I cleared my plate - pretty much - unheard of for me.
So there was room for pud.
I know Robert would approve of my choice.
Steamed Treacle Sponge & Custard.
What a wonderful pub & it wasn't shy of customers, far from it. I worry about our nation's traditional taverns disappearing.
I sincerely hope that The Red Lion in Thurgarton will be around for at least another five Centuries.
