Service with a Scowl

It's an earlier than usual start before work for me which means that there's no time for breakfast at home.

Once in town though, that situation needs to be rectified. Quickly.

Covent Garden in London is fit to bursting with places to meet & eat, have a coffee or a cocktail or simply to sit & stare at locals & visitors alike. One of my favourites for a first bite is on St Martin's Lane ..

It's popular & this morning, never more so. A new retreat to be sought.

A few doors up is La Roche.

Upon entering the establishment, I believe that a rabid dog wearing a 'And I bite' tag would have been made more welcome.

With barely an acknowledgement I was seated & two menus were tossed on the table.

Poached Eggs with Avocado & Chilli on Toasted Sourdough ordered together with a pot of fresh Mint Tea.

Expectations were low, however, I was to be pleasantly surprised.

A really tasty dish arrived with the hot, refreshing minty brew. Hungry, I scoffed almost all of it.

Looking on Tripadvisor, La Roche seems to divide opinion but, overall, the staff do not come out well of the reviews.

Grumpy Draws as I decided to dub the person serving that morning uttered not one word to me. Having worked in a café for a good few summers, I understand how thankless a task waiting and serving tables can be. Some customers can be rude, impolite & sneering. I bit my tongue on many occasions but those who were friendly made up for the rest. I suspect those people once worked in roles where they, too, had to deal with the boorish & ignorant.

As the American author H. Jackson Brown, Jr. once stated ..

"Good manners sometimes means simply putting up with other people's bad manners."

At least the food delivered.
