Far Too Good To Go!
I can’t recall who it was who put me onto it, but I have become a ‘cautious’ fan of the ‘Too Good To Go’ movement.
In its own words - “Food waste is a big problem, and we can be a solution. Too Good To Go is the app that lets you rescue unsold food from an untimely fate at your favourite spots.”
And that’s exactly what it does.
I downloaded the app ages ago, and have been monitoring what’s available locally - not a huge amount of choice in my area but I can imagine in a big city the possibilities must be massive.
But … my local supermarket often crops up, as do a few fast food outlets and coffee shops.
It works in this way … you look out for ‘magic bags’ being offered by local stores. If you like the look of it, you book the bag. It tells you when to go collect it. You collect it.
Simples.
So I finally bit the bullet and bagged a bag from up the road.
Up I went at 6pm to collect my booty at the allotted time. A few moments wait while a member of staff ran around the store like an episode of Supermarket Sweep, before handing over this … seriously massive … bag of swag.
I was very impressed.
However … got home, and laid everything out and checked what needed to be used fresh immediately, what had to be cooked up pronto, and what could safely be left a few days.
It then turned into Ready, Steady, Cook … trying to come up with interesting recipes with random ingredients. I now realise that daytime TV is actually a preparation for life in the fast lane.
If there is a downside - and how can there be when the whole lot only came to £3 - it’s that there is actually too much food that’s too good to go. My bag lasted - with a few augmentations - for a little over a week.
Anything wasted? Unintentionally. I forgot about a bag of salad leaves in the fridge.
I was devastated by my wastefulness.
