My Kinda Recipe Book
Any recipe book that includes the words ‘Grease a Quart Basin’ is going to win my heart.
Oh and …. make a PINT of custard. Bring it on.
I’m a great one for pressing my nose up against a plate glass window, especially if there is something I like the look of in the shop. Sad to say, most shops in the main street of Falmouth now have a ‘nose smudge’ in the middle.
So, I love old cookbooks.
I’m lucky enough to have inherited a massive box full from my mum, and grandmother and possibly even older than that. I’ve still got to trudge through them. There aren’t enough days in the year to get through them all, sadly.
In my sights - a Symington’s Recipe book from 1935.
A quick flick through and I can see loads of recipes I’d like to try. It was a time of simplicity and remarkable opulence given that it was only 6 years after the Wall Street Crash, and four years before the Second World War.
I’ve got my eyes on the Italian Trifle, Steak and Kidney Pie, Cherry Flan, Jam Roly-Poly (with Custard) and Banana fritters.
The world has moved on from some recipes though - I may give the Green Pea Eggs, Veal and Ham Pie, and the Pork Mould a miss ????
Look out for some 1935 style recipes on the blog.
Symington’s is still alive and well it seems, and behind some very famous brands - Chicken Tonight, Naked Noodles, and Mug Shot. Who knew!
Roll on 1935.
