Pastel De Nata

Pastel De Nata

It's the day after Storm Eunice hit. And how she made her presence felt.

122mph winds. Thousands of people without power. Travel chaos.

Mother Nature reminded us once again who's always in charge.

Today is calmer but still windy and the rain is pelting down. Last time I saw similar skies was in Lisbon.

Before the downpour, two of us found succour in a café serving warm Pastel De Nata, Portuguese Custard Tarts.

There's no easy way to eat them other than in one go, pretty much. Sweet, eggy, creamy & delicious messy jewels of joy.

Once home, I found this haven in London to afford the opportunity of reliving that Lisbon moment: https://santanata.com

It's a fascinating story behind these custard tarts, too. It involves monks, starch, cinnamon, revolution & the selling of the rights to the recipe: https://santanata.com/history/

Whenever I visit here & the comforting custardy nests are being packed into a box the question is always asked:

"Some drinks for you?" ..

Then comes the raised eyebrow as I reply:

"Just an English Breakfast tea please, not too much milk." ..

I didn't order coffee, you see. A Portuguese sin.
