Unexpected Bounty

Unexpected Bounty

A quick reminder this evening that the course of life can change in an instant.

Expected two friends to come round to join us for dinner tonight and so a lavish spread was laid on. Well…. moderately lavish. A pre-Christmas Christmas dinner - a fine beast of a turkey (although not the £70 ones that people seem to be buying this year) with most of the trimmings - the roast spuds, cabbage and gravy. Stuffing of course.

Then the ‘something’s come up’ message.

Oh.

Staring at the spread. Mentally thinking - ‘OK so we can have this and that tonight, then some of this for lunch tomorrow, and some cold cuts for tomorrow’s dinner.’ Nothing is ever wasted.

I suppose the Christmassy thing to do would have been to throw open the door and invite some strangers in, only we’re halfway up a mountain, off the beaten track and it was raining. So the mountain was bare of people.

Plus I’ll wager that most people locally had their own spreads to tuck into judging by the supermarket trollies being wheeled around.

But certainly a time to be thankful for the bounty busting out of the kitchen.

Even so, expect some ‘left over turkey’ suggestions in the coming days.
