Thank You Doctor Sloane
Rustled up a quick refreshing Guacamole for two main reasons:
I fancied it - it’s another hot day.
I spotted two avocados in the larder planning to go off at any second.
I know I buy too many avocados. I’ve always bought too many avocados. I need therapy.
I love guacamole though. See recipe down below, but how about some amazing facts about Avocados.
It was originally named an Alligator Pear by an Irishman called Sir Hans Sloane in 1696. He was the doctor to the Royal Family. When he died he gave his natural history collection to the country kicking off the British Museum and the Natural History Museum. He was offered chocolate in Jamaica and hated it so he mixed it with milk and used it as a medicine. His recipe got taken up by a chap called Cadbury. He is the Sloane of Sloane Square in London.
The world record for the biggest avocado was 2.4 kilos.
It’s a fruit and they all have to be picked by hand.
The Conquistadores in South America found they could make ink from the sap of the stone.
The skins of avocados are toxic to cats and dogs.
They are high in potassium, fibre and antioxidants.
National Avocado Day is on 31st July. National Guacamole Day is September 16th.
Anyway - to the recipe….
This is a quick and failsafe recipe. Lovely on oatcakes, nachos or crispbread. Perfect as a light lunch on a simmeringly hot day. I like mine more oniony than hot, hence the quantities.
Ingredients:
1 ripe Avocado
Half a small onion
Handfull of fresh Coriander
3 ripe Cherry Tomatoes
A drizzle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Dash of Cayenne Pepper
Juice of a lime
Method:
Put the flesh of the avocado in a bowl and mash it into a paste. Finely chop the onion, tomatoes, and fresh coriander, and add a sprinkle of cayenne pepper. Mix together really well. Drizzle with olive oil and lime juice.
