An American in Suffolk.

My friend IH from Nottingham & our New Jersey friend RS, who had just arrived in London, were both headed to Thorpeness to bring in the New Year. I was already bedded in there with the extended family & three hounds. It was a large rented cottage but nippy (see Sandwiches II) but, with so many of us in it & two more house guests due, there was enough body heat to rival any central heating system.

I've known IH for a long, long time. We first met in Nottingham at the same workplace trying to help local charities & community groups to get their message heard via radio. In all our many years of being friends we've had a lot of adventures together, both on these shores & overseas. We make each other laugh like drains. Sitting here writing this I'm smiling as I recall some of our escapades, (my clumsiness resulting in a liqueur splashing up the newly painted wall of a restaurant in Rome, running up the most horrific minibar bill in Vienna etc ..), the list is long.

I came to know RS through IH when we ventured across the pond to Boston for a holiday, (where I had to be rescued from the Ladies in one place & IH nearly took someone's eye out as he tried to break into a lobster claw), we had a ball.

The boys are collected from the railway station & once through the door are fed & well watered.

There was a game of Twister in the evening which helped to keep the cold at bay.

Dog walking on the beach.

Nightcaps.

Bed.

Morning & my father is back on breakfast duties, (again, see Sandwiches II), & there are things to use up. The three amigos are up. Quite late. One is very jetlagged.

MM: "Right, last round of orders"

Me: "Cheese on toast with spring onions please"

IH: "Sounds good, same for me, yes please"

RS: "What is it?"

MM: "Cheese on toast with spring onions"

RS: "Why not, let's give it a try, thank you"

It was duly served up, devoured in front of the coal fire by IH & myself. RS was a little hesitant.

RS: "The onion is raw?"

Me: "Yes, just shown the grill a little"

I think he had two bites & then retreated back to his bedroom for more sleep before tackling the next Minhall menu.
