Crab facts…

The largest crab in the world, the giant Japanese Spider Crab, can grow to 13 feet across.

Crabs communicate by waving their pincers or drumming their claws.

Humans eat about 1.5 million tons of crab every year.

Crabs make up 20% of all creatures that are caught in water around the world.

Crab meat is very high in vitamin B12. Just 2–3 ounces of crab meat will supply an adult with the daily B12 needs.

A quick whizz round Anglesey today - taking Byron to the vet - and then to the beach at Rhosneigr for a run of the beach as a treat. Normally it’s back via Benllech to pick up some dressed crabs from the little man in the hut.

Not so much now though. Trade is tough.

And now that the big supermarket nearby has scrapped its butcher, baker and fish monger sections, eating crab is being relegated to memory.

But crab as part of a seafood platter is a joy, even though it’s a faff to eat, unless it’s all done for you.

No better place to eat it than The Company Shed at West Mersea near Colchester, as Anne-Marie will testify. Although we usually manage to get a platter set before us when travelling to sunny seaside places, along with a chilled white or rosé wine.

No travel on the horizon for the time being. No crabs to be had nearby.

Crabs live to see another day.
